About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, the Accounting Specialist is responsible for providing support relating to accounting, including general ledger account reconciliations, and preparation of accounting reports and analysis relating to the general ledger, member and credit union accounts to assist management in making prudent financial decisions.
Main Responsibilities and Focus:
- Verifies, posts and balances various business transactions including funds received and disbursed, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Prepares and processes general journal entries to various G.L. accounts. Balances journal entries to General Ledger and maintains general ledger accounts. Reconciles sub-ledgers to the General Ledger and reconciles differences.
- Prepares and maintains various schedules including Fixed Assets, Prepaid Expenses, Accounts Payable and others as assigned, and balances to G.L. control account.
- Performs daily checking of assigned reports (e.g. banking reports, FAS etc.) to verify accuracy of postings. action on any errors identified to ensure they are corrected.
- Assist, when required, with Accounts Payable including auditing invoices against purchase orders and resolving any discrepancies, obtaining necessary approvals, preparing accounts payable cheques.
- Completes assigned credit union internal accounts and current account reconciliations and takes the appropriate action either by investigating and processing the adjusting entries or liaising with the relevant department to ensure that any differences are rectified in a timely manner.
- Assists in the preparation of the annual audit working papers and provides assistance to external auditors, regulatory auditors and internal auditors.
- Assists in the development of accounting systems and internal control procedures. Implements, maintains and evaluates systems and procedures; and recommends improvements.
- Coordinates, implements and maintains accounting information systems which track specific operational and financial data.
- Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to financial management, budget, accounting and payroll. Ensures record systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements and ensures compliance.
- Provides administrative support including preparing correspondence and reports; maintenance of the filing system; implementation of related policies and procedures manual; and other general office administration.
- Assists in the preparation of the monthly financial statements including variance analysis.
- Assists in the preparation of the annual capital and operating budgets for the credit union.
- Assists and backs-up other team members, when required.
- Completes other duties and projects as assigned.
About You
The ideal candidate for the Accounting Specialist position will have successfully completed a diploma in accounting, plus have one to three years related experience and/or training in an accounting environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Pursuing an accounting designation is considered an asset.
